By the Numbers: Why We Think the Chargers Will Make the Playoffs
FiveThirtyEight.com’s Nate Silver is a familiar face to political junkies, but us sports nerds had him first. Silver is the super-wonk numbers nerd who uses statistics to predict wins and losses with amazing accuracy. He called 49 of 50 state Senate races right in 2012, which is pretty darn impressive, and reason enough to listen when he starts predicting football wins and losses. Last week, he gave the San Diego Chargers a 52% chance to beat the Bills – a game that many others handed to the Bills – so no one should have been surprised when the Bolts held the Bills score down and walked off with the win. That puts the Chargers solidly in second place going into week 4 of the regular season. Nate Silver is projecting a 34% chance of the Chargers winning the division, and a 59% chance of the team making the playoff. We’d say that’s pretty good odds, even if he only gives them a 5% shot at winning the Super Bowl.
Beyond the Numbers
Of course, numbers can’t tell the whole story. For one thing, there’s the fact that the Chargers are contending with some nasty injuries – their best runners are down with injuries for the foreseeable future. That means that running back Donald Brown is their last man standing – er, running. Brown stepped up his game for the win against the Bills, but he’s going to have to step up even bigger if they’re going to keep on track for a playoff berth. There’s every indication that they’ve got what it takes, and most Chargers games will be, at the very least, entertaining.
