There is No Home Court Advantage

Surely you’ve heard that teams in the playoffs that play on their own home turf do better, right?  In fact, it’s one of the most common misconceptions out there when it comes to choosing winning MLB playoff teams.

The Facts: For the past ten years, homes teams playing in “ultimate games,” (the final game in the wild card series, game 5 of a division series, or the 7th game in theLCS or World Series), have lost more than they’ve won. In fact, those teams have gone 11-6.

The Takeaway: The home court advantage is not a reason to bet on a team. Even though it makes sense that the team with the most support from local fans would win, it doesn’t seem to matter.

The Best Team Doesn’t Always Win

Come on, admit it—you tend to choose the team that has the best chance for winning based on who has the best record of the season, don’t you? Well, if you do, you should know that you’re in great company. That is a myth that has stuck around for a long time, but unfortunately, the stats just don’t back it up.

The Facts: The truth is that since 1995, when the wild card playoffs began, only 4 in 21 teams with the best season record have won the playoffs. Those teams are the Yankees in 2009, the Rod Sox and the Cardinals in 2007 when they tied, and the Yankees in 1998. In fact, the Cardinals won in 2006, 2011, and 2014, and each of those years they had the worst record of the season.

The Takeaway: You can’t place your bets by a team’s season record, either.

A Team’s Beginning Performance Doesn’t Always Matter

Finally, many people choose their winning teams by taking into consideration how well the team did the in the beginning of the season. You’ll often find people justifying their pick by rattling off the teams stats in early season, and then using that great start to predict a team will win. For instance, last year the Red Sox won eleven games in a row in September and many people pegged them as the winner. But the team lost 5 of the 6 final games.

The Facts: The past ten World Series champions played the same throughout the season, not only in the beginning or the end of the games.

The Takeaway: Don’t look for teams that are on a hot streak, or play better in the beginning or end of the season. Instead, look for those teams that play consistently well throughout the season.

That wasn’t enough for Golden State, though – they had their eyes set on breaking a long-standing record. They ticked that goal in April, when Steph Curry led the team to a crushing defeat over Memphis and a record-breaking 73rd regular season win – a record that has stood since Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls knocked off 72 wins in 1995-96. To make it even sweeter, Curry kicked in eight three-pointers to hit 400 for the season, and 41 points to rack up a 30-point season average, breaking even more records. And best of all? It wasn’t supposed to go down this way – all through the winning season, popular sentiment had the Warriors going down in ignoble flames at some point. Instead, they spread their wings and took to the sky, leaving all the other teams in their dust.

MLB Ticket News – Five Teams Sweep Up the Weekend – Could It Get Any Better?

Not too long ago, we were touting the Red Sox-Yankees three-game series this past weekend as must-see baseball, and it was definitely that. Lucky fans with Red Sox tickets got to watch their home team sweep the three-game set in dramatic fashion, with a late-inning homer driving in the deciding runs in two of the three games. It was edge-of-your-seat baseball from the opening pitch to the closing out. The Sox closed out the weekend with a decisive clamp on first place in the American League East, and the satisfaction of cleaning up their first Yankees sweep since 2013. Boston fans know better than to count on early-season wins, but it’s a rare Red Sox booster whose heart isn’t fluttering just a little with the anticipation of watching their boys bring home the pennant.

MLB Tickets for All Upcoming Games

Even if that was the only hot series in the MLB this weekend, it would have been a great baseball weekend, but the Sox weren’t alone in their housekeeping. They were one of five – count ‘em, five – teams that swept their series. That’s pretty impressive, and no one has quite figured out the last time it happened. In addition to the Red Sox, the Nationals, the Tigers, the Phillies and the Rockies all took three of three games to claim sweeps – and each of them had dramatic moments to drive their fans wild.

Of them, the Nationals may have been the most fun to watch this weekend, with Max Scherzer turning in 7 shutout innings against the St. Louis Cardinals. That puts the Nationals at the top of the National League East in the early season standings, which is a nice place to be for a team that’s got the fourth-highest odds of winning the Series this year.

Not too long ago, most folks wouldn’t have given the Phillies any love in terms of Series odds, but this weekend’s sweep of the Cleveland Indians gives them a six-game winning streak, and some serious cred as possible contenders. Not only that, this weekend marks the first time the Phillies have pulled off back-to-back sweeps since 2012, a feat that has home town Phillies fans cheering and hoping.

The Tigers were another team that rallied late to come from behind and cap off a three-game series with a three-run homer and a double that drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth inning in their third game against the Twins. Detroit gets to try to repeat the feat and take some sweet revenge on Cleveland, who swept the Tigers last time they met earlier this month.

Finally, the Rockies, who have been reeling in a slump for the past five games, turned themselves around to take three of three games against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field. The victories were hard-fought, but Denver squeaked them out, and now has a 5 and 1 record against the D-backs, and a spot in a three-way tie for first place in the National League West.

Between the back-to-back wins and the Blackhawks’ status as defending Stanley Cup champions, the Blues went into game 7 as the probably-not-gonna-make-it underdogs – and emerged with the Central Division title. Along the way, they gained some pretty serious cred for knocking the defending champions out in the first round of post-season play for the first time since 2012, and played a game that has been widely hailed as “hockey at its finest.” Those are some pretty high accolades for a team that was, just last year, being called “the worst NHL playoff team in history”.

And, to be fair, the moniker was at least semi-deserved if you look at history. The St. Louis Blues were founded in 1967, and ran up three years of losing in the Stanley Cup Finals. Since then, they have not ever made it past the second round of NHL playoffs – and only made it past the first round 18 times. It took an especially bittersweet turn the last two seasons, when the Blues racked up incredible winning seasons, taking or tying their division records – only to choke and get punted out of the playoffs in the first round. It’s no surprise that fans fully expected last night’s game to be the Blues’ swan song appearance for the season.

But that’s not what happened. After dropping two games in a row to let the Blackhawks smell another Stanley Cup run in the seventh game, the Blues turned it around and delivered a 3-2 win to take the division title – and hopefully, exorcise the curse that has kept them out of the Stanley Cup lineup for 46 years. And it wasn’t just any old win. The morning sports headlines have been blaring about it since the game ended last night. Game 7 was an “instant classic,” “hockey at its finest” and “the kind of game you’ll remember the rest of your life.”

One of the most iconic moments – and the most quintessentially Blues-y – was Troy Brouwer’s first-ever game 7 goal in seven consecutive game 7 appearances. To put it plainly – he almost muffed it. His drive to goal slammed into the post and bounced back out to him – and not only did he whiff the puck, he almost stepped on it and landed on his pads on the ice. In all, Brouwer slapped at the puck three times – but third time’s the charm. That’s the one that slipped past the goalie to light up the score light.

Back on the bench, teammates and coach nearly had heart attacks. And out on the ice, Robby Fabbri says, he celebrated the goal three times before it actually made it into the net. Brouwer himself told reporters that if he’d missed that shot – with everything riding on it – he might have quit hockey entirely.

Luckily for him, it didn’t come to that. Instead, 11 minutes later, the Blues were celebrating their first advance to the second Conference round in years. They meet the Dallas Stars for the their first post-season matchup since 2001, starting Friday night on Dallas’ home ice.
