Great MLB Rivalries Sell MLB Tickets

mlbIf you’re looking for a great afternoon or evening at the ballfield, you can’t do better than to get MLB tickets to a game featuring one of baseball’s greatest rivalries. Rivalries add spice to the game, amping up the fans in the stands and lending some extra juice to the players on the field. Major league baseball is famous for its rivalries, some of which date to the league’s earliest years and some that are far more recent. The most potent MLB rivalries are regional ones, though some of those have been watered down as teams moved across the country. Others, particularly those of more recent origin, have developed as two teams repeatedly face one another in post-season play. Is your favorite team among this list of Top MLB Rivalries?

Red Sox – Yankees : The Greatest MLB Rivalry of All Time?

Okay, that may be an arguable statement, but if it’s not at the top of the list, it’s darn close. The standing wisdom is that the rivalry started when the Sox sold Babe Ruth to the Yankees in 1919, kicking off the Curse of the Bambino and a long dry spell of 80 years without a Boston World Series pennant. In that same 80-year span, the Yankees took home 26 World Series wins – and gloated about it in a way that hit BoSox fans right in the feels. Needless to say, when the Sox turned their fortunes around in 2004, their fans did their own share of gloating. The rivalry is loud, bitter and divisive – and it makes for amazing games.

Dodgers – Giants: The Greatest MLB Rivalry of All Time?

When it comes to declaring the greatest MLB rivalry of all time, the general consensus splits between the Sox-Yankees and the Dodgers-Giants. Both rivalries have long, long historic roots, and the latter dates back even further than the former – into the late 19th century, when both teams were New York favorites. While proximity had a lot to do with the early rivalry, it was also fed by class sentiments. The Brooklyn-based Dodgers were working class heroes going up against the elitist New York Giants, which was based in upper class Manhattan. When the Dodgers moved to Los Angeles in the late 1950s, the team owner convinced the owner of the Giants to move to San Francisco successfully exporting an East Coast rivalry to sunny California. The rivalry has been fed by both team’s successes – and watered by the rival team’s failures – for well over 100 years, and it’s fantastic for business. MLB ticket sales figures show that the most consistent sales figures at each team’s home stadium happen when they’re playing their rivals.

Cubs – Cardinals – MLB’s Most Civil Rivalry

The Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals hold the distinction of carrying on one of the most civil rivalries in all of major league sports. Like the other top MLB rivalries, this one has deep historical roots – the two teams first faced each other in a league championship in 1885. Unlike the others, it’s been marked by civility and respect rather than trash-talking and put downs. This was never quite so marked as it was when the Cub’s Sammy Sosa greeted Card’s Mark McGwire to congratulate him on his record-breaking 61st home run in 1998.
